How to create Mermaid Makeup by Modcloth.com

Great how-to video posted by modcloth.com.  I hope they make more of these for this Halloween!

Barn Voyage's Halloween Update

So I went to update my farm this morning and got a surprise, Barn Voyage redecorates for Halloween!  I'm always happy when people put the effort in and I love the new loading graphic (I was getting burnt out on the old truck one).

Click here to download the app today in support of Halloween!   (P.S. my neighbor code is posted below.)

Rise of the Jack O'Laterns - Descanso Gardens

The Rise of the Jack O'Lanterns at Descanso Gardens was a fun way to get into the Halloween mood.  The site was well organized; with easy parking, good crowd control, and a full menu of seasonal concessions.

My only issue with the experience was that most of the pumpkins were styrofoam, which seemed to limit the creativity of the artists.  A lot of the jack o'lanterns appeared to even be laser-cut rather than hand-carved.  Call me old-fashioned, but I missed the hand-carved jack o'lanterns.

Halloween at Target

Target has created a large, well-stocked space filled with inspirational and fun Halloween decorations and toys this year.  We enjoyed the Chris March's "Big Fun" display, where larger than life foam wigs, beards, and glasses where a instant success!

How to make a Halloween Countdown Display

Picture
1) Take one of the fence panel and cut into three equal pieces (about 2' each).

2) Align four wood fence panels next to each other as shown to the right and attach two of the previously cut lengths to the back at a 90 degree angle.  Make sure to place them about a foot from the top and bottom (8 wood screws - one per panel).
Note: you can use more screws for stability if necessary.

3) Take the remaining fence panel and attach the remaining precut board to the bottom to form a 90 degree angle (two screws).

4) Attach the door hinge to the other end of the  intact fence panel (three wood screws).

5) Attach the other side of the door hinge to the back of your fence panel, centering it on the the top horizontal support board.

6) Attach the two eyelets to the back of the display and the wood support, at equal eye level when closed, and attached both with string or chain.  This is to keep it stable when open.

7) Put your drop cloth on a paint-safe area and stand your frame in the center of the drop cloth.  (shown right)
8) Spray the white or tan spray paint lightly on the front of your panel to create an even background.
Picture
Shopping List
  • 6 x wood fence panels
  • one door hinge
  • 2 eyelets
  • 3 feet of string
  • drop cloth
  • screw driver
  • thirteen wood screws
  • two "L" screws
  • a can of tan or white spray paint
  • two 4" by 6" clipboards
  • numbers (your choice)
  • decorative paint (your choice)
For this panel, I used white, black, and orange.
Picture
9) Next, apply your design, leaving space for your clipboards.
Picture
For this version, I painted the text and pumpkin by hand by using cardboard to create a stencil and your design is also a great alternative.
Picture
10) Use your drill to pre-drill two holes for your "L" screw where you want the top of your clipboard to hand from, leaving about  6 - 7 inches apart.

11) Screw in the two "L" screws into your pre-drilled holes.

12) Hang your clipboard from the "L" screws.  They should be about 1-2 inches apart.

13) Add your numbers and you are finished!

You now have a customized Halloween countdown decoration that you can proudly display to your neighbors!   A great and subtle way to ensure that everyone gets their decorations up on time this year!

Rise of the Jack O'Lanterns - booked!

We were a little leery of committing to the Rise of the Jack O'Lanterns, happening this year at the Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge, but thanks to peer pressure, I've caved and now have our tickets in hand.  If you don't have your tickets yet, I'd get them quickly as many of the best dates are already booked.  I'll let you know how it goes.  Wish me (and them) luck!

I also included some hand-picked items that caught my eye below...

World Market goes Día Des Los Muertos for Halloween

Not a bad showing from World Market for Halloween. Though the selection was limited, it was unique, and was also the first to go for a Day of the Dead theme.  They also had a significant collection of Halloween themed beer and wines.

As a bonus, all decorations are 25% off  and the wine was buy four and get 20% off.

Halloween Idea for Larger Dogs

Picture
If you've ever owned a big dog, you know that an XL in dog size won't fit much bigger than a 40+ pound dog, which means if you have one of the larger breeds, your halloween selection is limited at best.   That's why I'm excited about this design found online by Sue from Los Angeles.   For one, it's pictured on a dog larger than most costumes would ever fit.  And two, it's Star Wars!  Let me know what you think

Home Goods doing Halloween in Style!

It's early in the season and Home Goods is rolling out a wave of high-class, competitively priced Halloween goodies!   I had to restrain myself from buying out the shop.  They really have something for everyone this season.

Big Lots ready for Christmas - in September?!

Looks like Big Lots is skipping Halloween this season.  Only a half-hearted selection of Halloween goods this year while the main seasonal area is already fully stocked and ready for Christmas.

Their website is also not doing well at promoting the season, with Halloween being listed well below the fold.

Click here to let Big Lots! know what you think of their poor Halloween turnout this year!

Poor Showing at Joann's Fabrics

Picture
Joann's Fabrics usually has a good showing of Halloween products, but not this year.  The shelves are poorly stocked and about 4 in every 5 products is "Fall" themed, rather than designed for Halloween.

When it came to finding Halloween items that were silver, purple, or black (including silk flowers), they had nothing to offer.  But Christmas themed items were well stocked and well displayed .... in September!

Click here to share your disappointment with Joann's Fabrics on their poor seasonal showing and ask them to stop generalizing Halloween as "Fall"!
